A lens flare is a visual artifact caused by light scattering, or flaring, in a lens system. As a result, streaks, irises, rings, or spots appear in the image. This can serve as a creative tool for adding drama or realism to a scene. A light flare can lend a sense of freedom and carefreeness to a summery green field, evoke memories of a beautiful sunset, or accentuate a vehicle's headlights. When creating a 2D or 3D scene, this technique infuses the frame with energy and gives it the look of documentary footage. Light flares also make it possible to unify scene elements and harmonize their colors into a single tone.
